Google's Cutts: Nofollow Links In Advertorials Or Else!

Yesterday, Google's head of search spam, Matt Cutts posted a video on Google's stance on using advertorials in a way to manipulate Google's search results.
As you can imagine, if you use advertorials and those advertorials have links to your web site - you must nofollow them or Google can take action against your web site.
In February, a major floral company was penalized over advertorials. And now Matt Cutts is making it crystal clear by posting Google's guidelines on it:
Google Advertorial Guidelines
I covered this in more detail over at Search Engine Land.
There are folks saying, well - what about video content? Product placement. Do those have to be disclosed for users? I assume Matt would say yes. But product placement in videos do not manipulate Google's algorithms, at least not yet.

Google Penguin 2.0 Version 4 Is Now Live

As I reported last night at Search Engine Land,Penguin 2.0 / 4 is now live - this is the next generation Penguin update. As Google's Matt Cutts added, this impacts 2.3% of English queries and also impacts other languages but the percentage depends on the level of spam in those languages.
Matt officially announced it while on This Week In Google see towards the very end of episode 199.
Matt said on his blog:
We started rolling out the next generation of the Penguin webspam algorithm this afternoon (May 22, 2013), and the rollout is now complete. About 2.3% of English-US queries are affected to the degree that a regular user might notice. The change has also finished rolling out for other languages world-wide. The scope of Penguin varies by language, e.g. languages with more webspam will see more impact.
This is the fourth Penguin-related launch Google has done, but because this is an updated algorithm (not just a data refresh), we’ve been referring to this change as Penguin 2.0 internally.
As you know, we've been expecting this for some time, since its been over 6 months since the previous Penguin data refresh. Again, this is not just a refresh, but an algorithmic update.
Here are the previous updates:
There are lots of people complaining about ranking declines and some about boosts. It is too early to tell and I do expect to post a poll next week asking you if you were impacted or not.
I deeply hope you only were positively impacted by this update.

Ex-Googler: “To Please Google With Your SEO, Forget About SEO”

It’s not everyday you get to hear from someone that’s worked on Google’s Search Quality/Webspam team and isn’t named Matt Cutts.
http://searchengineland.com/figz/wp-content/seloads/2012/10/seo-200.jpgBut Andre Weyher, whose LinkedIn profile lists a two-year stint as a member of the search quality team, recently spoke with James Norquay, a search/digital marketer based in Australia, and shared some interesting comments that may — and I’ll say more about this below — help search marketers and webmasters understand a little better how Google views certain SEO strategies and tactics.
(Note: As I write this, the site is offline, possibly due to high traffic. You may be able to read Google’s text cache here.)
Weyher explains that each person on the search quality team covers a certain “market” or “specialization.” His was content quality and backlink profiles. Below, some of the quotes that I found most interesting from the interview along with a comment or two from me in italics where appropriate.

On Link Building

“Everyone knew that Penguin would be pointed at links, but I don’t think many people expected the impact to be as large as it turned out to be. At this stage a webmaster is out of his mind to still rely on techniques that were common practice 8 months ago.”
He’s referring to the Penguin update that launched in late April, of course. Google estimated that it would impact about three percent of search queries. There have been two Penguin updates since: in late May and early October.
“Not only this but take PR for example, getting a link from a high PR page used to always be valuable, today it’s more the relevance of the site’s theme in regards to yours, relevance is the new PR.”
“…don’t dismiss directories completely. I have heard people talking about directories being altogether bad and advise people to avoid them. This is not the case, good quality, moderated directories, or niche directories are still worth looking in to.”

On What Makes A Spammy Link Profile

“There are a good few elements taken into account here, like how many links are there in total? A very important one; what is the quality of the pages they come in from? Do the pages look “real” or are they just there to host the links? What anchors are used? The commercial vs. non commercial ratio of the anchors.”
One of the most common post-Penguin pieces of advice that I’ve seen is to vary the anchor text of links pointing to your website. This interview seems to confirm that Google is (or was) looking at anchor text ratios.

On On-page SEO

“Of course you can’t over-do it as Google now also penalises for over optimisation, so don’t putt [sic] more than 2 commercial keywords in your titles or Google will frown upon it.”
Google might disagree with this quote. There was talk earlier this year that Google was planning to penalize for over-optimization, but when the Penguin update launched, Matt Cutts clarified that “over-optimization wasn’t the best description.” See our Penguin launch article for more on that. Also, I’ve never heard any other Googler make such a specific comment about keywords in title tags.
“Try to work on your website as if SEO was not part of your plan.”
“…what I tend to tell people is the following; if you want to please Google with your SEO, then forget about SEO.”
This echoes a theme that I’ve seen many smart SEOs talk about this year. Probably the best article on this idea is Adam Audette’s SEO Should Be Invisible.

Final Thoughts

We reached out to Google, but the company declined to comment on the interview.
The interview offers what I think is an interesting and potentially valuable look into how Google views certain SEO strategies and tactics in relation to its search quality and anti-webspam efforts. But I think it’s also important to keep in mind that these are the views of just one member of a large team at Google. As with any interview, it’s up to us as readers to try to separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff — i.e., what may reflect Google’s views versus what may be the interviewee’s opinions.

What is Google Penguin? | Main Goal of Google Penguin Update

Just like Google Panda, Google Penguin is another animal into the virtual forest of Google search engine. Its main goal is to terrorize websites with low quality content.

What Exactly is Google Penguin?

This algorithm is programmed to penalize websites that incorporate any kind of Black Hat SEO techniques and strategies to rank. Low quality sites are also targeted (Websites with poor content). The update made by Google Penguin diced websites associated with spamming. The fight of Google Penguin against spamming has resulted to unbelievable downfall of established and aged websites from their previous rankings.

Petition to Pull Back Google Penguin Update

There is a petition signed by almost one thousand individuals asking Google to pull back its Penguin update. The creator of the petition who is Jane Dorpish sees the Google Penguin update as a monopoly on the part of the said search engine to further give protection to the interests of multibillion dollar online sites similar to other search engines and Amazon, WikiHow and eHow. To simplify, its target really are websites with ads all over it.

Controversial Penguin Update Compared to Microsoft Case

The FTC or the Federal Trade Commission has acquired the services of former Justice Department prosecutor to handle FTC’s case against Google which only proves that small business owners are not the only one seeing the Penguin update of Google as a play of its evident power.
Ms. Wilkinson is considered a world-class attorney said that she and FTC is already working on the investigation however stressed out that it will be a great challenge since the giant Google is involved. If you still remember, 14 years ago, likely situation has been raised when the government brought Microsoft to court.

Looking Back at Microsoft Case 14 Years Ago

Although there is no formal case filed by the FTC yet, the same circumstance and measures are seen against Google. Looking back at the controversy Microsoft had faced several years ago regarding monopolizing its market by bundling its Microsoft OS and the Internet Explorer browser which prevented competitors like Netscape, Apple and Linux from having to compete. Microsoft’s goal back then is to gain significant foothold and alter OS’s API in favor of the Internet Explorer.
The judgment was issued by Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson favored the FTC. Micorsoft was required to separate to be split in two parts, one for the manufacture of its operating system and the other one for the development of its software components thus prevented the company from monopolizing the market.

Has Google Penguin actually been using its Power to Alter Search Queries?
Has Google Penguin actually been using its Power to change the results of search engine queries? This is the ultimate question; we do not have a concrete answer if Google is really trying to monopolize its market share to benefit websites it is affiliated with. Google however announced that the Google Penguin Update is to promote high – quality content sites and that their ultimate goal is to decrease the rank of sites that violate guidelines of Google.

Ultimate Remedy for Google Penguin
Google said that they only want webmasters to utilize White Hat SEO techniques and strategies or people with no SEO efforts on their websites at all. The ultimate remedy for Google Penguin update is to abandon off – page search engine optimization for a while and focus on creating quality content.
The interesting thing here is if there will be any filed case against Google in the future. So webmasters concentrate on content with higher value and let go os duplicate ones. If you will recover, then it’s a good news and for those who might have regained their search engine authority because of the measures they have applied, I heard Google Platypus Update will be released real soon.

Today (Mar 31st 2009) I saw that Google bot visited my site multiple times. I was excited, because i am waiting for this from the past few days. Of course Google bot visits every blog as usual, however till now I don't know when it's exactly visiting. Have on the following screen shot so that you can have better idea about what i am discussing.

Google bot Stats
Stat counter is nice tool. I found following better features in it.
  • Each and Every visit
  • Accurate visitor spend time
  • complete referral link
  • Exact Keywords
Of course other services too providing the above features, however those are paid. Stat counter was the only tool which provides accurate information for free. One back log in this is they won't store more than 500 visits in free account. We need to upgrade our account to get details of more entries.

As per my knowledge is concern only 3 Hats matters most in SEO:

  1. White Hat SEO
  2. Grey Hat SEO
  3. Black Hat SEO
    1. White Hat SEO:

White Hat SEO means completely following the ethical methods to acquire good rankings in search engines for a website. If a website really providing good information to visitors then white hat SEO works very well
and gives the best results. Now you have question that “what are white hat SEO methods?” All the methods which aren’t trying to cheat or manipulate search engines or visitors are called white hat SEO methods. I hope only few sites like Wikipedia, Google etc... follows white hat SEO methods.

    2. Grey Hat SEO:

Grey Hat SEO means following combination of ethical and unethical methods to get fine rankings in Search Engines for a website. Most of the SEOs use Grey Hat SEO Methods to attain rankings. Grey Hat SEO works fine most of the time and most of the professionals recommend it. Grey Hat SEO methods aren’t unethical, it includes little stuffing of keywords in the site and back links etc. Now a day’s these methods are quite common while promoting website. Most of Corporate websites, Personal Blogs etc … follows Grey Hat SEO Methods.

    3. Black Hat SEO:

Black Hat SEO stands to follow completely unethical which are used to cheat, manipulate search engines as well as users. In the past years search engines aren’t able to recognize these methods and difficult to find out and filter the websites which use Black Hat SEO techniques. Search engines are became smarter now and able to find out and blocks websites which use black hat techniques. Search Engine Quality Professional are working hardly and updating regularly the SE algorithms to give the best results to the visitors.
