Google+ Plus vs Facebook – Infographic

I am starting to wonder if Google+ is a waste of time as a marketing platform for bloggers and brands.
Google+ launched with a bang last year and has now reached over 170 million registered users and 100 million active users.
The demographic is mainly male at 67%, the average age is 28 years old with a technical bent.
I do like the Google+ interface and I am sure it had a significant impact on maintaining competitive  pressure on Facebook to keep its user interface fresh with its new “Timeline” design rollout and evolution.
But there is a problem.
Google+’s engagement levels are so low that actually rank behind MySpace and almost any other significant social network you want to mention.

Google+ Engagement is Poor

Research from RJ Metrics shows that that despite the large user base they are hardly spending any time on the site whether vthat is publishing, reading or engaging.
Here are some of the findings:
 •  The average post has less than one +1, less than one reply, and less than one re-share.
 • 30% of users who make a public post never make a second one.
 • After making five public posts, there is a 15% chance that a user will not post publicly again.
 • Among users who make publicly-viewable posts, there is an average of 12 days between each post
Other research reveals that Google+ users spend on average only 3 minutes per month versus Facebook at over 400 minutes.

 What about Traffic Referral?

I am finding that it is hardly referring any traffic to my blog (despite having over 7,000 followers on Google+)
In speaking to other bloggers at the “Social Media Down Under” conference recently they agreed that they were only posting there because it was Google.
What I am finding also is that Pinterest drives more traffic to my blog than Google+.
A lot of users are posting but only because it is a Google property!
Here is some more information via an Infographic regarding Google + vs Facebook

What About You?

How are you finding Google+…is it a ghost town? Is it driving traffic for your website or blog?
Look forward to hearing your feedback and stories.

Did the real Justin Bieber just send you a friend request? Now you can know for sure, thanks to a new Facebook feature: Verified Pages.
Much like verified accounts on Twitter, verified Facebook pages will now display a small blue check mark beside their owner's name on the social network. The check mark will also appear beside the individual’s name in search results, as well as anywhere else on Facebook where it appears.

Just like Twitter’s verified accounts, Facebook's verified status won't be offered to everyone. Verified accounts will be specifically available to public figures with large audiences, namely, celebrities, government officials, popular brands and some journalists.
Verified Facebook Pages and profiles will start rolling out Wednesday.
What do you think about the new feature? Are you happy Facebook is verifying the authenticity of some accounts? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

How Facebook “Sponsored Results” Search Ads Aren’t Like AdWords At All

Search marketer ears likely perked up to hear that Facebook launched search advertising this week. But anyone who’s expecting it to be similar to AdWords or adCenter is going to be disappointed. Actually, it’s more akin to other forms of Facebook advertising, despite appearing in search results.
Consider these typical AdWords ads:
They appear above or to the right of search results. In contrast, the new Facebook Sponsored Results appear within the search box, as suggestions when you type:
Beyond placement, Facebook’s search ads can’t be targeted to keywords, as can Google’s ads, nor can they link to content outside of Facebook. The chart below summarizes some of the key differences:

Facebook Launches Sponsored Results Search Ads API

Facebook announced the launch of their Sponsored Results search ads API late last night, bringing a month of testing to a close.
The new program allows advertisers to embed ads in the list of type-ahead search results. These ads can target Facebook Pages, Places, Apps, and users who have Subscriptions enabled. These are similar to standard on-site ads with 70-character messages that lead to Facebook Pages or apps.
sponsored-result-facebook
The ads are a new category of search ads that will appear at the top of user search results rather than mixed with organic results, and are marked Sponsored. Facebook’s announcement simply read, “Sponsored Results is a great way for you to drive more awareness of your app, page or place. We are making an API available for developers to sponsor search results.”
Early reports name the first advertisers in this new format as Disney, Zynga, Marvel, Kixeye, King.com, and dating site Match.com. Few users report seeing the ads, so far.
Users will have the option to hide the ad and indicate whether it was Uninteresting, Offensive, or otherwise inappropriate.
Currently, these Sponsored search ads are not available in France. “Ads created targeting France will return an error,” Facebook wrote in the Developers resource.
Sponsored ads for search will only support CPC bids (Type 1) or Optimized CPM bids (Type 7), for the time being. The minimum bid price if the advertiser is using these ads for an entity they are already promoting in $0.01. For all other Facebook entities, the minimum bid is $0.15.
In a message sent to advertisers and obtained by TechCrunch, Facebook describes their Search as “one of the most used features on Facebook.” They also note that brands are not able to drive traffic off-site using these ads, which is in keeping with Facebook’s mission to keep everyone and everything within their own ecosystem.
Despite some more buzz about Facebook moving further into Google’s territory, these ads are internal to Facebook. When - or if - Facebook makes it possible for their search ads to target entities anywhere on the web, that might be a valid discussion. Currently, they are simply capitalizing on ad space available within a much-used feature of their own.
Advertisers can get started today in the Power Editor and should go to the associated Developers resource for help getting started.

7 Tips For Crafting Local Business Updates In Facebook

Do you spit out status updates on Facebook for your local business without much thought? Carefully engineering your status updates can result in more effective targeting, better engagement with your audience, and improved EdgeRank to help more of your followers actually see your status updates.
These tips should be considered to be “spice”, rather than the meat in cooking up your Facebook contents. Use these tips with some restraint and balance or you could create fatigue for your followers, resulting in reduction of your audience engagement rather than growth of it.
Increasing engagement with your status updates can widen your reach by optimizing for Facebook’s EdgeRank algorithm. Without EdgeRank, your status updates are less likely to be immediately visible to your followers via the Top Stories they will frequently see when they arrive on Facebook.
A basis of EdgeRank are the number of interactions your audience has with your postings. A status update which immediately draws a few “likes”, comments and shares will be given more ranking weight than a status update with no interactions.
Read on for 7 tips on optimizing your local status updates. Some of these tips could apply for national businesses as well as local business pages.

1.  Scheduling

Schedule posts to appear during “prime times” when more of your followers are likely to interact with them. Facebook now lets you schedule updates in advance, so you could write up a number of updates in advance.
Generally, there are a few times when more of your followers will be on Facebook and will see your status updates sooner. Experiment over time to figure out when the “sweet spots” are for your followers. There are indications that using Facebook’s native scheduler can improve EdgeRank, compared with external content scheduling apps.
Here’s how to do it, illustrated with status updates for a fictitious tea company:
Scheduling Facebook Status UpdatesClick the clock icon below the status update text box, then select the date parameters.

2.  Add Tags

I wrote about using tags to optimize Facebook status updates some time ago, and Facebook subsequently saw fit to dumb down the marketing advantages involved.
As a result, your tagged posts from your page are no longer visible on other pages. Even so, it can still be worthwhile as a feature to make your status updates more interactive and interesting for your audience. Increasing interactions with your audience is a primary goal, even if there’s no immediate payoff involved – tagged posts may increase clicks associated with the update.
Selecting a tag for a Facebook status update
Tagging subjects associated with Wikipedia article pages that are embedded in Facebook are one good option. It’s usually best to “Like” the page you wish totag, first, to help insure it’s presented to you as a choice when you’re ready. Then, use the “at-symbol”, (“@”), when you start to type the name to be tagged.
Tagging a business's page in a Facebook status updateTagging another business’s Facebook page in your status update might also result in them seeing your post, and choosing to “Share” it with their users – another EdgeRank indicator.

3.  Add A Location In Status Updates

There’s no clear advantage in terms of local search rankings within Facebook for doing this as of yet (Facebook’s search functionality still leaves much to be desired).
However, it can dress up an otherwise plain status update and provides yet more content with which to interact.
How to add a location to a Facebook status update
For a general status update, you click on the little “placemark” icon button below the text box. (Oddly, the icon is highly reminiscent of the location pinpoint icons in Google Maps. Hmm…)
Adding a map to a Facebook status update
For general status updates, you could use the city where your business is located as a sort of default location. Using the city will provide you with an attractive map and pinpoint icon.
Adding local places to status updates in Facebook.
Alternatively, perhaps use the name of your neighborhood or district. You can select your own store’s name as the location, but Facebook apparently decided it’s too recursive to display the map on your own page, so they chose to only provide the text link in the status update in such cases, similar to tagging a person or another page.
Tagging events in your area as locations is also viable — such as if you’re sponsoring a nearby charitable event, or if you’re telling your customers who might be participating to drop by when they’re going to be near.

4.  Target Specific Locations

This new feature is especially good for chain store companies that might be trying to promote multiple stores via a single, unified Facebook page. It allows your status update to only appear for users who are in a specific area.
For example, if my fictional tea company was just beginning to ship to a distributor in Boston, I could specify that the status update only appear for Bostonians.
To set this, click the icon below the status update text box which is likely defaulted to “Public”, then select Location / Language:
Targeting status updates by Location in Facebook
Then, the interface will allow you to target anywhere from a country to a state/province to a city.

5.  Target By Language

The same interface allows you to target a status update by language, too, which can be useful if you’d like to provide custom marketing to specific groups, such as Spanish-speaking customers here in Texas where I live.
Facebook status updates allow targeting by Language

6.  Add Pictures Or Photos

It nearly goes without saying that adding something with graphic interest to your status updates will grab more attention and will result in more Likes. Intersperse your updates with eye-candy, and your audience will be more likely to share, comment and like your posts.
Add a photo to a Facebook status update to spice it up!

7.  Emphasize Special Posts

You can especially emphasize an important post one of two ways: choosing to “highlight” a post will allow it to flow across both columns of the timeline:
Highlight a status update in Facebook to make it spread across two columns in the Timeline.Choosing to pin a status update to the top can allow you to make one post particularly “evergreen”, or can help you insure one important message is kept first and foremost for a period of time.
Pin a post to the top of your Facebook page like a sticky blog post.
Irritatingly, it doesn’t appear that one can choose to make a status both highlighted and pinned to the top simultaneously.
As you can see, there are a number of things you can do to tweak your status updates. Engagement is the name of the game here — you don’t have to know precisely how much any given factor might influence your status updates’ EdgeRank in order to know that increasing the interactions with your audience will generally pay off.
Opinions expressed in the article are those of the guest author and not necessarily Search Engine Land.
